Excellences & Perfections

On April 19, 2014, Amalia Ulman published a picture with the words “Part I” and the description “Excellences & Perfections” on her Instagram account. This was the start of this multimedia work of art, but without the knowledge of her subscribers. Since the whole thing was experimental, she used clichés that her subscribers already knew. She adopted three personalities over the next five months. First “a cute Tumblr-loving ingénue”, then a “basic sugar baby who's into streetwear” and finally a “post-rehab wellnes freak”. For example, she pretended to have a breast operation by uploading pictures of her hospital gown and her breasts bandaged and editing her pictures with Photoshop. Other things, like her diet and pole dancing, weren't a show, but part of her real life. She even faked a breakdown on her Instagram page. By the end of it all, she had thousands of new subscribers, but she wasn't really interested in the number of subscribers, just that it meant everything was going according to plan. On September 14, 2014, a black and white picture of a rose was uploaded to her account with the caption "THE EN D-EXCE LLENCES AND PERFECTIONS". After educating its subscribers, it received a lot of criticism from users. Their work held up a mirror to them and they didn't like what they saw in it. The intention of this performance was to show how easy it is to manipulate people with mainstream characters. The photos are still on her Instagram page today.
