Mary Bauermeister (born September 7, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German artist and garden designer.

Life

Education

Mary Bauermeister was born as the daughter of the professor of anthropology and genetics Wolf Bauermeister and the singer Laura Bauermeister. She broke off school attendance at the high school in Cologne-Kalk half a year before graduation and applied to the Ulm School of Design in 1954 , where she attended basic courses with Max Bill and Helene Nonné-Schmidt , a former student of Paul Klee . In 1955 Bauermeister enrolled at the State School for Arts and Crafts in Saarbrücken with Otto Steinert (photography). In 1956 she settled in Cologne as a freelance artist, where she lived off the sale of her pastels. Between 1954 and 1960 she traveled to Paris every year and got to know the art scene there.

Atelier builder

In 1960 Bauermeister rented an apartment on the top floor at Lintgasse 28 in Cologne, where several concerts, exhibitions and intermedia events took place between March 1960 and October 1961. The cultural events in the Bauermeister studio were among the first “pre-Fluxus events” and had a major influence on the artists of the later Fluxus movement. Avant-garde poets, composers and visual artists such as George Maciunas , Joseph Beuys , Wolf Vostell , Hans G Helms , David Tudor , John Cage , Christo , George Brecht and Nam June Paik organized unconventional concerts of "the latest music", readings, Exhibitions and actions. Mary Bauermeister's “Pre-Fluxus” activities contributed significantly to the development of the Cologne art scene.

Karlheinz Stockhausen

In 1961 Mary Bauermeister took Karlheinz Stockhausen's composition course at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt , and soon afterwards she lived with him and his wife Doris Stockhausen in a ménage à trois for a few years . When Stockhausen and his wife separated, she married him in 1967 and gave birth to two children: Julika (* 1966) and Simon (* 1967). During this time her family name was also Mary Bauermeister-Stockhausen, in 1973 the couple divorced. In 1972 their daughter Sophie was born (child with the composer David Johnson ), in 1974 their daughter Esther (child with the Israeli visual artist Josef Halevi).

First successes in museums

In 1962 Bauermeister had her first solo exhibition in the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum with works from 1958 to 1962 and simultaneous, all-day performance of electronic music pieces under the direction of the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and other composers, for whom Stockhausen's scores were also shown in showcases in close proximity to Bauermeister's works were. In October 1962 she traveled to New York , attracted by the vibrant pop art . In the artist circle of Pop Art, Nouveau Réalisme and Fluxus , she cultivated friendships with Robert Rauschenberg , Jasper Johns , Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely . Bauermeister celebrated considerable artistic success in New York. In the 1960s she exhibited regularly at Galeria Bonino on 57th Street.

After 1970

In the 1970s Mary Bauermeister returned to Germany and began to occupy herself with border sciences such as geomancy . She used the knowledge gained in the process to plan gardens, which she carried out for public and private clients around the world. Today the artist lives in Rösrath near Cologne. On a radio show in 2016, she spoke about her memories of several previous lives .

Bauermeister's work developed increasingly from two-dimensional drawings into space - via relief and material images she finally came to the “lens boxes”, probably the artist's most mysterious group of works, with which she made her breakthrough on the New York art market in 1964. In white wooden boxes open to the viewer, Bauermeister created small worlds out of shiny glass, magnifying glasses, lenses and prisms, backed by fine ink drawings and applied texts. With their two or three glass image levels, these boxes offer space for the thoughts and ideas of the artist and are intended to encourage the viewer to observe closely.

On the occasion of her 70th birthday, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne acquired her wall installation Needless needles from 1963 and organized a work exhibition (until January 23, 2005). In 2007, the Schwerin Museum acquired works by the artist and installed a permanent art space with these works next to the exhibition rooms of their revered role model Marcel Duchamp . These works include a. from the Music Box (1968), Red magnetic image (1959), Studio Fetish (1970) and Five shrouds (1963) from the series Ready trouvées as a tribute to Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades .

In 2010, the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen am Rhein presented the “lens boxes” so characteristic of Bauermeister for the first time in the context of art from the 1960s. For this extensive retrospective , works from the major New York museums ( Whitney , MoMA , Guggenheim ) were shown in Europe for the first time.

Mary Bauermeister's works don't defend your freedom with poisened mushrooms or hommage à John Cage (1964), No fighting on christmas (1967), 50 years of Fluxus 1962–2012; Edition Zopf from (2012), Repro (1964) and Dissolution (2013/2014) are exhibited in the Fluxus documentation in the museum FLUXUS + in Potsdam.
