In 1996 he studied at the California Institute of the Arts . Martin Boyce has been Professor of Sculpture at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts since 2018 .

“Boyce 'work is characterized by a large number of references. The focus is on classics of modern design and modern art. The artist cuts up Arne-Jacobsen chairs and puts the fragments together to form mobiles, which combine the ruinous presence of the fragments with the lightness of earlier works by Alexander Calder . He reworks the modular shelving systems by Charles and Ray Eames and combines the components into sculptures that appear paranoid and contain numerous allusions to other artists such as De Stijl . "

“It's just as much about space and the space between the sculptures as it is about the sculptures themselves. Of course I have to make (these works of art), but I want the audience to feel they have found them. "
