Life

After completing his studies in cultural studies and aesthetic practice at the University of Hildesheim and Creative Curating at Goldsmiths College , University of London , Grammel volunteered at the Frankfurter Kunstverein from 1999 to 2000 , where he accompanied the reorientation under Nicolaus Schafhausen . He then curated the ninth edition of the Videonale (2001) in Bonn. Grammel received the Young European Curators Scholarship from the Germinations Europe Foundation , which has now been closed, and which took him to Poland between 2001 and 2002. From 2002 to 2004 he worked as a curator at the Kunstverein München , whose program he designed together with Maria Lind according to the principles of New institutionalism - for example through the exhibition Telling Histories with Liam Gillick (2003). In 2004 he switched to the Kassel Art Academy as a research assistant and published the monograph Exhibition Authorship: The Construction of the Authorized Position of the Curator for Harald Szeemann . At the same time he taught at the Art Academy Umeå. His research project We invite all , developed there together with the author Jan Verwoert, was shown in early 2005 in the exhibition Whatever happened to social democracy at the Rooseum in Malmö . From 2005 to 2011 Grammel was artistic director of the Grazer Kunstverein . During this period, in addition to solo exhibitions such as Mladen Stilinović (2006), the thematic exhibitions Public Folklore (2011) and The Blue Flower with Katarzyna Kobro , which were listed in the Best-Themed Shows 2007 category of the frieze magazine , were created. On January 1, 2012, Grammel became director of the Kölnischer Kunstverein . Exhibitions with Janice Kerbel, Hilary Lloyd, Silke Otto-Knapp (2012) and Thea Djordjadze (2013) were created here. He left his five-year contract early in order to take over the management of the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (MGK) in Basel from November 1, 2013 , which was renamed the Kunstmuseum Basel Gegenwart in 2016 . In 2017, he curated Richard Serra: Films and Videotapes, the first international exhibition that was solely dedicated to Serra's entire cinematic oeuvre . The Martha Rosler & Hito Steyerl : War Games project was counted among the most important exhibitions of 2019 by various newspapers.

Grammel's works are shaped by the recurring motif of the connection between art and social issues. He lives and works in Basel .
