Vicovu de Sus ( German Oberwikow ) is a town in the Suceava district in Romania .
location
Vicovu de Sus is located in Bukovina , right on the Ukrainian border in the valley of the Suceava River , on the north side of the Obcina Mare Mountains . The district capital Suceava is located about 55 km southeast.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1436 under the name Jicovu de Sus . In 1466 Ștefan cel Mare ( Stefan the Great ), the prince of the Vltava , bought the village and donated it to the Putna monastery .
After the Principality of Moldova increasingly came under Ottoman influence, Bukovina became part of Austria-Hungary in 1774 . In 1787 families from the Rhineland , Franconia , Baden and Württemberg settled in the village . Mostly Romanians still lived in the place .
After the First World War, Bukovina and with it Vicovu de Sus became part of Romania. In 2004 the place received city status.

At the 2002 census there were 14,125 people in Vicvovu de Sus, including 13,736 Romanians and 377 Roma .
traffic
The Rădăuți – Brodina railway runs through Vicovu de Sus and has two stations (Vicovu de Sus and Bivolăria) in the city. There are regular bus connections to Rădăuți ( Radautz ).
