Katarzyna Kobro (born January 26, 1898 in Moscow , † February 21, 1951 in Łódź ) was a Polish sculptor of German- Latvian and Russian origins and as such a representative of constructivist spatial concepts.

Life

Kobro studied from 1917 to 1920 at the Moscow Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and was married to the Polish artist Władysław Strzemiński (1893–1952) since 1920 . In Moscow, Kobro, like Kazimir Malevich , Olga Rosanova , Vladimir Tatlin and Alexander Rodchenko , was a member of the Union of Visual Artists. As a result, together with like-minded people, she organized the Smolensk local branch of UNOWIS [russ. Утвердители Нового Искусства = Fastener of New Art ], an offshoot of the Vitebsk artist group of Malevich founded in 1920 , with whom Kobro and Eliezer (El) Lissizki kept in touch.

In late 1921 and early 1922 Kobro and Strzemiński fled to Poland, where Kobro received Polish citizenship in 1924. Together with Henryk Berlewi , Henryk Stażewski , Mieczysław Szczuka , Teresa Żarnowerówna u. a. the couple was a member of the Blok group of Cubists, Constructivists and Suprematists , which Kobro and Strzemiński left at the end of 1926 to subsequently found the Praesens group together with Bohdan Lachert , Szymon Syrkus and others .

Due to differences in content, Kobro, Strzemiński and Stażewski left Praesens again in 1929 to join the group a. In the same year together with the two poets Jan Brzękowski and Julian Przyboś . r. , usually read as Revolutionary Artists , which existed until 1936.

In 1930 Kobro was also instrumental in founding the Museum of Modern Art in Łódź , and in 1932 Kobro and Strzemiński became members of Abstraction-Création . In 1936 Kobro signed up as a supporter of Károly (Charles) Sirató's Paris Dimensionist Manifesto .

Kobro had with Strzemiński the daughter Jakobina (Nika) Strzemińska (1936–2001), who worked as a doctor in Łódź and wrote biographical writings on the artistic work of her parents.

In 2011, Nina Czerkies played Katarzyna Kobro in the Polish television production “Powidoki” under the direction of Maciej Wojtyszko, not to be confused with the 2016 film of the same name by Andrzej Wajdas , the story of which only takes place after Kobros and Strzemiński separated.
