Rangel is a municipality in the metropolitan area of Luanda , the capital of Angola .

history

In the 1930s, Rangel was an uninhabited area with some abandoned fields and a cemetery. The land belonged to the Rangel family of Portuguese origin. In the 1950s the land was leased to a few families. In the following decade, the Portuguese government began urbanization. With the project “A home for every family” (“Um Lar Para Cada Família”) social housing was built for the resettlement of the residents of some of the musseques of Luanda. According to the 1964 census, Rangel had 35,848 inhabitants. After Angola's independence in 1975, the ensuing civil war led to an uncontrolled immigration of war refugees from rural areas.

administration

Rangel was one of the nine city districts (Municipios) that formed the metropolitan region of Luanda. In the course of the changes in the administrative structure from 2011 Rangel became a municipality (Comuna) in the district (Município) of Luanda, in the province of Luanda .

Rangel has an area of 6.2 km² and about 261,000 inhabitants (2006). It is bordered by Ingombota to the west, Sambizanga to the north, Cazenga to the east, and Kilamba Kiaxi and Maianga to the south .

Rangel consists of the sub-municipalities Terra Nova , Rangel and Marçal .

traffic

With the Estação dos Musseques train station, Rangel has an express train connection to Luanda and the new international airport in Luanda. The municipality is bounded by the two arteries Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues and N'Gola Kiluanje. The main thoroughfare in town is Avenida Hoji ya Henda.

health

There are health centers in the Terra Nova and Rangel districts, but these often do not have any medication for the patients, for example for AIDS or malaria , for months . In 2018, 1080 malaria deaths were recorded in Luanda province , most of them in Rangel, mainly due to poor basic sanitation. About 50 families then left the settlement area. However, they left a heap of 27 truckloads of garbage.

education

Rangel has the Ngola Mbande secondary school with 12 classrooms in the Marçal district. At the beginning of 2019, around 7,500 school desks were missing in the primary schools in the municipality of Rangel.
