Stefan Kern
Stefan Kern (* 1966 in Hamburg ) is a German visual artist .
life and work
Kern studied from 1988 to 1993 with Per Kirkeby , Ulrich Rückriem and Franz West at the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule , Frankfurt am Main. His first solo exhibition was in 1994 at the Hammelehle und Ahrens Gallery, Stuttgart. In the academic year 2002/2003, Kern had a visiting professor at the Kunsthochschule Kassel , and from 2003 to 2005 at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg . This was followed by a professorship at the Ècole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Strasbourg (until 2009).
Kern's sculptures, objects and installations are located in the border area between art and design. As offers to sit or climb, they are designed on the one hand to facilitate the interaction between the work of art and people. On the other hand, however, the often strictly symmetrical, modular shapes, the hard materials and the immaculately pure appearance cast doubt on this function. Their monochrome - often white - lifts them out of their surroundings as a foreign body.
Kern lives and works in Hamburg.
