Sprüth Magers (gallery)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sprüth Magers Gallery is a German art gallery that was founded in 1998 by Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers . There are branches in Berlin , London and Los Angeles .

history

Monika Sprüth opened her first gallery for women in the old town of Cologne in 1983. She campaigned for emerging artists such as Jenny Holzer , Barbara Kruger , Cindy Sherman and Rosemarie Trockel .

In 1991 Philomene Magers opened a gallery, also in Cologne. It mainly focused on an earlier generation of artists than that represented by Sprüth. For example, she represented the artists Donald Judd , Robert Morris , Dan Flavin , Ad Reinhardt , John Baldessari and Richard Artschwager . However, Magers also showed works by younger artists such as Sylvie Fleury and Karen Kilimnik.

The complementary programs and common interests of Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers led to the decision in 1998 to merge the two galleries. Branches in Munich, Berlin and London followed. The Cologne and Munich galleries were closed in 2008. In 2016 the gallery opened a branch in Los Angeles. In ZEIT , Tobias Timm described Sprüth and Magers as "the two most successful gallery owners in the world."
