Monika Sprüth

Monika Sprüth (born May 18, 1949 in Memmingen ) is a German gallery owner .

Life

After studying architecture, she worked as an urban planner in Oberhausen before opening a gallery in Cologne's old town in 1983. She initially exhibited young, as yet unknown artists such as Rosemarie Trockel , Cindy Sherman , Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer , whom she helped to gain international recognition, "with which she broke the trend in the art market that had been dominated by male artists." She was also instrumental in developing the early careers of artists such as Peter Fischli , Louise Lawler , Andreas Gursky , Thomas Demand , Andreas Schulze , George Condo , Axel Kasseböhmer and Thomas Scheibitz .

In 1998 she founded the Sprüth Magers gallery with Philomene Magers , based in Berlin, London and Los Angeles. a. John Baldessari , Cyprien Gaillard , Donald Judd and Joseph Kosuth represents.

She is an appointed member of the German Academy for Football Culture .
