In connection with gold mining, the media and NGOs cite two main points of criticism: environmental damage during extraction and the contribution made by gold from crisis regions to the financing of civil wars. Problems of exploitation and arbitrary land grab are closely related to this.

The organization tries to eliminate or improve the points of criticism with various measures. Among other things, there is an initiative for the sustainability of gold mining. In doing so, through voluntary commitments and certification of environmental management systems according to ISO 14001, the member companies should be encouraged to minimize the environmental impact of funding and to submit to the "International Cyanide Management Code".

The organization published several papers on these subjects:

  • December 2008: Safeguarding Workplace and Community Health: how goldmining companies are fighting HIV / AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
