Newcrest Mining is an Australian gold mining company based in Melbourne . The company is Australia's leading gold company and is listed on the S & P / ASX 50 stock index. Newcrest has eight mines located in Australia and the Pacific Rim.
Company history
Newmont Mining was founded in New York City in 1921 by William Thompson as a holding company. In 1966 the company became active with a subsidiary in Australia. In 1971 gold was found in Telfer ; Telfer became the subsidiary's largest gold mine. In 1980 the subsidiary was renamed Newmont Holding Pty Ltd and the company's headquarters moved to Victoria . In 1987 Newmont Holding went public on the Australian Stock Exchange. In 1990 Newmont acquired Australmin Holdings Ltd. and BHP Gold Mines Ltd. The name was changed to Newcrest Mining . In 1992 Newcrest expanded beyond Australia and developed the Halmahera Islands gold field in Indonesia . On September 1, 2010, Newcrest took over the Australian Lihir Gold Ltd for 7.4 billion euros, making it the world's fifth largest gold company. In addition to mining operations, Newcrest also conducts mineral exploration .

Newcrest operates four mines in Australia in 2014 . These are the Cadia Valley in New South Wales the open pit Cadia Hill and the two underground mines Cadia East and Ridgeway , and the Telfer mine in Western Australia .
Pacific
In Indonesia , Newcrest owns the Kencana and Toguraci mines , the Gosowong opencast mine and a joint processing facility with a smelter in Gosowong (together Gosowing operations ).
In Papua New Guinea , Newcrest operates the Lihir opencast mines on Niolam (Lihir) and Hidden Valley on the main island. Hidden Valley is a joint venture with Harmony Gold and produces silver as well as gold.
Africa
Newcrest operates the Bonikro opencast mine south of Yamoussoukro in the Ivory Coast .

criticism
Newcrest Mining has been criticized by various human and environmental rights organizations for the conditions in its Indonesian mines. A conflict broke out with the people of Halmahera Island in 2004, during which the company's private security forces clashed with protest groups. The security forces fired warning shots and a man died from a ricochet. The area was protected until the gold mining areas in Indonesia were developed. The Indonesian government in Jakarta revoked the protection status as a result of the discovery of gold.
