history

The predecessor of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) was Australia and New Zealand Bank Limited (ANZ). It was founded in London in 1951 through the merger of the Bank of Australasia and Union Bank of Australia Limited .

Before 1951

The Bank of Australasia and Union Bank of Australia Limited were founded independently in London in 1835 and 1837 as colonial banks for the colony of Australia. Another thing they had in common was that they both opened their first bank branch in Launceston , which was still part of New South Wales at the time , and their start was made easier by taking over another bank. In 1835, the Bank of Australasia took over the Cornwall Bank, founded in 1828, and the Union Bank of Australia started taking over Tamar Bank, founded in 1834, in 1837 .

Both banks performed similarly over the years, with the Bank of Australasia focusing more on the industrial sector and the Union Bank of Australia focusing more on the rural sector. But both banks covered all business areas with their extensive branch network in Australia and were also involved in the British colony of New Zealand, which was newly founded in 1840, from 1840 and 1864 respectively .

After 1951

After merging to form Australia and New Zealand Bank Limited , the bank started its expansion in Asia and the Pacific, founded a bank in the Solomon Islands in 1966 , opened an office in New York in 1968 and a year later in Tokyo .

In 1970, the largest merger in Australian banking history to date, Australia and New Zealand Bank Limited merged with English, Scottish and Australian Bank Limited and formed the basis for the group of companies that still exists today. The merger took place under the legislation of the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Act 1970 and had to be reconstructed after the merger of the companies in London, through corresponding legislation in Australia and New Zealand.

As has been the case since the two colonial banks Bank of Australasia and Union Bank of Australien Limited were founded, their headquarters and headquarters were always in London and the main banking business in Australia and New Zealand. This was to change with the relocation of the headquarters of the newly created banking group in 1977. The new headquarters of the company was the previous Australian headquarters in Melbourne , Victoria .

In 1971 an office was opened in Malaysia , in 1979 the Bank of Adelaide was taken over , a branch each opened in Singapore and New York and in 1984 the Grindlays Bank was bought. After opening offices in Bangkok and Thailand and taking over the business activities of Barclays Bank in Fiji and Vanuatu , the bank received a license to open a branch in Frankfurt .

Branch offices were opened in Paris and the Cook Islands in 1988 . In 1989, as part of its privatization efforts, the New Zealand government sold the state-owned Postbank to the group for NZ $ 665 million . After further bank acquisitions in 1990 and 1991, the company expanded to the Philippines , in 1993 to Shanghai in the People's Republic of China , to Hanoi in Vietnam , to Tonga and Indonesia and finally opened a branch in Beijing in 1997 .

In 2003 the National Bank of New Zealand was acquired through the takeover of Lloyds TSB and on June 26, 2004 it was transferred to the already existing ANZ Banking Group (New Zealand) Limited . Two days later it became the ANZ National Bank Limited. On October 30, 2012, the bank was renamed ANZ Bank New Zealand Limited .

On October 22, 2009, then CEO Mike Smith presented the new AU $ 15 million company logo at the bank's headquarters in Melbourne .
