The NZX 50 Index (NZ50) is the leading equity index in New Zealand . It includes the 50 largest companies on the New Zealand Exchange .
calculation
Technically speaking, the NZX 50 Index is a performance index . It consists of the 50 most traded stocks of the New Zealand Exchange (NZX) in Wellington , with the stock exchange turnover of the past six months being decisive. Only the freely tradable securities of the stock corporations are taken into account in the weighting . The NZX 50 assumes that all cash dividends and other income from owning the shares, such as subscription rights and other small caps, will be reinvested in shares in the index.
The dividends distributed are added to the weighted market value of the index: If a distribution is made to the investors, the share price is usually reduced by the amount of the dividend. The payments are added back to the course immediately. The calculation is continuously updated during NZX trading hours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time (11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. CET ). The composition of the index is revised every quarter (March, June, September and December).
history
20th century
The index started on January 31, 1957 under the name Barclays Index with a base value of 100 points.
In the 1980s New Zealand developed from a managed economy with an emphasis on agriculture to a liberalized industrial nation with a free market that can compete with other western nations and is one of the most deregulated and privatized economies in the world. Trading activity and market capitalization grew with the development of the financial market and the private sector. The stock boom lasted for several years. From November 1982 (553.43 points) to November 1986 (3,790.62 points) the Barclays Index rose 586 percent. After the speculative bubble burst , New Zealand's leading index lost 68.2 percent of its value by the end of 1990 (1,202.86 points).
On July 1, 1991, the New Zealand Exchange took over the calculation of the Barclays index . To reflect this change, the Barclays Index has been renamed the NZSE 40 Index . The base value is 1,434.98 points, the closing level of the Barclays Index on June 28, 1991.
On October 22, 1997, the NZSE 40 closed trading at 2,635.50 points. The Asian crisis led to a large outflow of capital from New Zealand. On October 5, 1998, the share index closed at 1,692.15 points, down 35.8 percent. By April 29, 1999, the stock market barometer rose to a closing level of 2,292.84 points.
21st century
After the burst of the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ) and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the NZSE 40 fell to a low of 1,789.52 points by September 24, 2001. That was a decrease of 21.9 percent since April 1999. September 24, 2001 marked the end of the downward trend. From autumn 2001 the index was on the way up again.
On March 3, 2003, the NZSE 40 Index was replaced by the NZSX 50 Index as New Zealand's leading index. The base value is 1,880.85 points, the closing level of the NZSE 40 Index on February 28, 2003. On October 1, 2005, the name was renamed the NZX 50 Index .
On May 24, 2007, the share index marked an all-time high with a closing level of 4,333.24 points. That was an increase of 142.1 percent since September 2001.
In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the index began to decline again. From the third quarter of 2008, the crisis increasingly affected the real economy. As a result, share prices collapsed worldwide. On October 8, 2008, the stock market barometer closed with 2,948.31 points, below the 3,000 point limit. The NZ50 hit a new low on March 3, 2009 when it closed at 2,417.95 points. This corresponds to a decrease of 44.2 percent since May 2007.
March 3, 2009 marked the end of the downward trend. From spring 2009, New Zealand's leading index was on the way up again. By January 11, 2013, it rose by 70.9 percent to a closing level of 4,131.75 points.
