history

The company was founded in 1987 and under its name was the largest company on the New Zealand Exchange by market capitalization . In addition to the NZX, the shares were also traded on the ASX and NYSE . Telecom New Zealand was listed in the All Ordinaries and in the NZX 50 Index . The main fields of business were fixed line and mobile telecommunications, including all associated services. The wholly owned subsidiary Xtra Limited was responsible for the internet business and was the largest internet service provider in New Zealand.

From 2008 onwards, the company was operationally divided into three areas:

  • Telecom Retail
  • Telecom Wholesale
  • Chorus (responsible for the internet business)

The market share in the mobile communications business was almost 70% in 1999 and only around 49% in 2007. The decline in the mobile communications business was due to the competitor Vodafone , which entered the market as Vodafone New Zealand at the end of the 1990s .
