St. Clement

The St. Clemens Chapel is a branch church of the Bietzen parish of St. Martin. The history of the chapel goes back to the 17th century. The patronage after Saint Clemens is an indication that quarry workers lived in Menningen (until 1492 Mennik).

history

In the first documentary mention from 1623, St. Clemens is listed as a branch church . The chapel, built in its current form, dates from the 18th century. From 1739 the chapel was a pilgrimage destination. Before the destruction in World War II , the chapel had a domed tower and a barrel-shaped vault. The chapel was renovated in 1951, 1998 and 2010.

Furnishing

The building is designed as a hall . The baroque altar, built around 1770, shows the figure of St. Clement and two bishops . Parts of the stalls and the communion bench, like the altar, are of baroque origin. The restored floor tiles were also used on the Titanic . The wayside cross in front of the chapel, carved in sandstone, dates from 1748 and served as a plague cross. Because of the risk of infection, the faithful avoided the interior of the church and gathered in front of the cross.
