The company, based in Perth , Western Australia , was created in 2015 through a spin-off from BHP Billiton . Among other things, large parts of the aluminum , manganese and nickel business were transferred to South32.

The name of the mine operator alludes to the fact that the majority of the mines are located in the southern hemisphere.
