Cochlear is a global medical technology company that develops, produces and sells implantable hearing aids . It was founded in 1981 and is headquartered in Sydney, Australia. Cochlear has been a publicly traded company since 1995 . The German office of Cochlear is based in Hanover ( Lower Saxony ).

history

Graeme Clark played a major role in the research . The Australian medical professor specializes in cochlear implants . His research at the University of Melbourne laid the foundation for the success of Cochlear. In 1978 he successfully supplied a patient with a multi-channel cochlear implant for the first time and initiated the serial development of these implants.

Products

The main products of Cochlear are the Nucleus implant, the electro-acoustic hybrid implant and the Baha bone conduction implant. Around a quarter of a million people in more than 100 countries use hearing aids from Cochlear.

Nucleus implant

A cochlear nucleus system enables children and adults with a functioning auditory nerve to hear despite profound hearing loss. It basically consists of the external sound processor and an implant. The Cochlear Nucleus System bypasses the damaged areas of the ear and transmits audio signals in coded form. These are transmitted to the brain as electrical signals via the auditory nerve.

Hybrid implant

A hybrid implant generates electrical stimulation and is particularly suitable for people with severe to deafness hearing loss in the upper frequency range. It converts auditory impressions into electrical signals and also provides acoustic amplification of low frequencies. In this way, the residual hearing can be used as effectively as possible. The hybrid system was launched in 2008 and was honored with the Australian Engineering Excellence Award and the International Design Award in 2009.

Baha bone conduction implant

With the help of a Baha bone conduction implant , the inner ear is naturally stimulated because it uses the body's ability to transmit sound via bone conduction. The name of the system is derived from the first letters of the English term for "Bone Anchored Hearing Aid". A small titanium implant is placed in the bone behind the ear, where it is supposed to grow into the bone. This enables people with conductive hearing loss, combined hearing loss and one-sided deafness to have better hearing.
