Woolworths Group is an Australian company based in Bella Vista , New South Wales . The company is listed in the S & P / ASX 50 share index. The company is the largest retail company by market cap in Australia and New Zealand . Furthermore, Woolworths of the largest distributors of food products in Australia and the second largest in New Zealand. The company is also the largest alcohol dealer and poker machine operator in Australia. Around 175,000 people are employed in the group.

Company history

The company opened its first store on December 5, 1924 on Pitt Street , Sydney . The founders were Percy Christmas, Stanley Chatterton, Scott Waine, George Creed and Ernest Williams. As a company name (company) Woolworths was chosen because the name was available for registration in the Australian state, although the retail company FW Woolworth Company was active in the United States . The name therefore does not come from business or financial ties to the US retail company, but is due to the fact that the company was free for registration in Australia in 1924. In the following years more stores opened in Australia. In 1929 the first store opened in Wellington , New Zealand. New Zealand's first food store opened in Auckland in 1956, and New Zealand's first supermarket opened in 1971.
