The ANZ Bank New Zealand Limited (ANZ), based in Wellington , is currently by far the largest banking company in New Zealand and Australian subsidiary of ANZ Limited .

history

The history of the company, whose parent company had its origins in the Bank of Australasia , which was founded in 1835 under the Royal Charter in London , began on October 23, 1979 with its foundation in New Zealand under the name ANZ Banking Group (New Zealand) . The parent company had been formed seven years earlier from the merger of ANZ Bank and English, Scottish and Australian Bank Limited in 1970 and ANZ Bank itself was formed from the merger of Bank of Australasia and Union Bank of Australia in 1951.

After a few further acquisitions in New Zealand, in 2003 the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group bought the National Bank of New Zealand , which was owned by Lloyds TSB at the time. This made the ANZ the undisputed number one on the New Zealand banking market. On June 26, 2004, the National Bank of New Zealand was transferred to the subsidiary, which was renamed ANZ National Bank two days later . On October 30, 2012, the bank was renamed to its current name.
