history

Focus Digital AG was founded in May 2000 and went public a few weeks later. The initial listing on the Neuer Markt took place on July 13, 2000. After the merger of Focus Digital AG and Tomorrow Internet AG to Tomorrow Focus AG in 2001, the company took over the license to publish the German Playboy magazine in 2002 . In the first few years of its business activity, Tomorrow Focus AG focused on the business area of advertising-financed online portals. In addition to the news portal FOCUS Online, the initial portfolio also included various online brands from the Milchstraße publishing group, which was merged into the Burda media group.

In 2003, the stock corporation was listed for the first time in the Prime Standard of the German stock exchange . From 2006, majority shares in HolidayCheck AG and EliteMedianet GmbH were taken over. In 2008 Tomorrow Focus also took part in Adjug, a marketplace for Internet advertising inventory. In the same year, the majority takeover of the medical evaluation portal jameda and the finance portal Finanz100 took place, since 2011 completely.

In 2012, the company took a majority stake in the Dutch online travel agency Tjingo and in Webassets BV, operator of the Zoover and MeteoVista portals. Shortly thereafter, Tomorrow Focus also took over the majority of the French online travel agency Ecotour.com (RPC Voyages SAS). In 2012, the parent portal NetMoms GmbH was taken over. In October 2013, the German-language edition of the Huffington Post started under the umbrella of Tomorrow Focus AG. With effect from December 2, 2013, the internet group sold the digital technology agency Tomorrow Focus Technologies GmbH to the Dutch TIE Kinetix NV. In spring 2014, the first version of an app-based organization and reminder system for documents from the start-up organize.me was launched however, it was closed again on February 29, 2016 due to a lack of sufficient users.

Tomorrow Focus sold all of its journalistic brands, i.e. Focus Online, the Huffington Post, NetMoms and Finanz100, to Burda on May 1, 2015 . The digital marketer Tomorrow Focus Media was also transferred to Burda and was renamed ForwardAdGroup in the course of this takeover. In June 2015 Tomorrow Focus AG sold EliteMedianet GmbH, operator of the dating portal ElitePartner, and in November 2015 jameda GmbH, operator of the doctor recommendation portal of the same name. The company has been a purely online travel company since 2016. With effect from June 28, 2016, the company was renamed from Tomorrow Focus to HolidayCheck Group. In November 2019, the HolidayCheck Group obtained a groundbreaking judgment at the Munich Regional Court in the fight against review fraud. In July 2020 the Zoover portal was sold to Vakanties.nl for an unknown amount. Meteovista BV was sold in August 2020. The parent company WebAssets BV remains the property of the HolidayCheck Group.

On August 3rd it was announced that due to the Covid 19 pandemic, around 20% of the total workforce would have to be reduced.

Business activity

structure

As of January 1, 2014, the group was re-segmented into the Travel, Publishing and Subscription segments due to a new corporate strategy.

  • The Travel segment includes Holidaycheck (operator of the hotel review and travel booking portals of the same name), the travel division of Webassets BV (operator of the Zoover hotel review portals), Tomorrow Travel BV (operator of the Dutch online travel agency Tjingo) and RPC Voyages SAS (operator of the French online -Travel agencies Ecotour).
  • The Publishing segment includes Tomorrow Focus Media GmbH, an online marketer, Tomorrow Focus Publishing GmbH (operator of Internet portals such as the news and utility portal FOCUS Online , the news and opinion platform The Huffington Post , the stock exchange portal FINANZEN100 and the parent portal Netmoms) and the weather division of Webassets BV (operator of the Mrteovista / Weeronline weather portals).
  • The Subscription segment includes Elitemedianet GmbH (operator of the premium dating portal Elitepartner.de ), Jameda (operator of the doctor recommendation portal of the same name, jameda.de) and Organize.me GmbH (operator of an app-based organization and reminder system for documents).

In mid-2015, the business model was completely realigned. The company turned into a travel agent. All other activities were rejected again. The Publishing segment was sold to the mother company Burda for EUR 30 million. Revenue in the Travel segment in 2014 was EUR 95.8 million and EBIT was EUR 16.7 million. This corresponds to around 60% of total sales.

In June 2016, the shareholders and shareholder representatives present at the annual general meeting of Tomorrow Focus AG in Munich approved a change of the company name to HolidayCheck Group AG. The company, which has over 400 employees, has since brought together HolidayCheck AG (operator of the hotel review and travel booking portals of the same name), Driveboo AG (operator of the rental car portal AutovermietungCheck) and WebAssets BV (operator of the Zoover hotel review portals and MeteoVista- / WeerOnline- Weather portals).
