Copper and gold ore bodies are mined at the Cadia Hill Mine and the Ridgeway Mine , just two miles away and shared by the same owner . The mining industry is located approximately 20 kilometers south of Orange in New South Wales , Australia . The open pit Cadia Hill mine the company Newcrest Mining took 1998 its production and the underground mining of the Ridgeway mine in April of 2002.
geology
The copper mines are located in volcanic rocks and sediments from the late Ordovician . A porphyry copper deposit is present at the ore deposit . It was formed when ore-bearing rock intruded into the Cadia Hill monzonite .
The area contains six significant mineralized zones, the copper-gold occurrence at Cadia Hill , the copper-gold magnetite occurrence in a skarn at Big Cadia and Little Cadia , the ore mineralization in veins and fissures at Cadia East and Cadia Quarry, and one so-called stockwork mineralization at Cadia Ridge .
The Cadia Hill Mine ore deposit contains 210 million tons of ore with a percentage of 0.72 grams of gold and 0.18 percent copper per ton. At the end of June 2004, 1.4 million ounces (44 tons) of gold and 140,000 tons of copper had been extracted.
The ore from the Ridgeway Mine comprises 41 million tons at 2.4 grams and 0.75 percent copper per ton. 3.2 million ounces of gold and 310,000 tons of copper were extracted.
operator
The operator of the mines is Newcrest Mining, a mining group that operates other mines in Australia, the Telfer Mine in Western Australia and the Cracow Mine in Queensland . Another Newcrest mine, the Gosowong Mine , is located in Indonesia .
After the prolonged drought in Australia in 2007, Newcrest asked the Orange City Council for municipal water delivery, which they approved. This later led to a legal battle because Newcrest did not pay for the additional water that was delivered and insisted that the city had guaranteed free delivery in the 1990s. The city countered that the group had significantly expanded mining operations at Cadia Ost and Ridgeway, thereby changing the fundamentals of business.
