The Telfer mine is a copper - gold - mine , which at Telfer , a mining town in the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia , Australia is. The mine is owned by the Australian company Newcrest Mining , the largest gold mining company in Australia, which is also one of the ten largest in the world.
The Telfer Mine is one of four Newcrest Mining mines in Australia.
In the 2010/2011 financial year, the Telfer mine produced 32,078 tons of copper and 621,629 ounces of gold.
history
The mine is located on the traditional land of the Aborigines of Marthu .
The copper-gold deposit was discovered in 1972 by Newmont Mining , the forerunner of Newcrest Mining , which was founded in 1966. Mining began in 1977 with a joint venture between BHP Billiton and Newmont Mining . In 1990 Newmont Australia Limited and BHP Gold Limited merged to form Newcrest Mining. In 1997 the mine had produced 5 million ounces of gold. The mine was closed in August 2000 due to high costs
In 2004, Newcrest Mining reopened the mine as an open pit and in 2006 it reopened the mine in the adjoining hard rock and built a facility with a 138 megawatt power plant for the separation of copper and gold with a 450-kilometer gas pipeline from Port Hedland .
In June 2008, the gas crisis in Western Australia severely affected mining production due to the explosion at the Varanus Island facility , which resulted in the layoff of 400 Telfer Mine workers .
In 2010, Newcrest announced that the Telfer Mine could be operated underground until 2017 and open pit until 2023.

The Telfer Mine can be reached via Telfer Mine Road , an outback track built and maintained by the mining company , which is connected to the north-west of the Great Northern Highway via Rippon Hills Road and Marble Bar Road .
