Mark di Suvero

Mark di Suvero (born Marco Polo di Suvero ; born September 18, 1933 in Shanghai , China ) is an American sculptor .

Life

Suvero was born in Shanghai to Italian parents. After immigrating to the USA, he studied from 1953 to 1957 in San Francisco at City College and at the University of California in Santa Barbara and Berkeley . In 1957 he moved to New York . After an accident in 1960, Suvero became paralyzed. Nevertheless, his first solo exhibition took place in New York that same year. In 1968 he participated in the 4th documenta in Kassel in the sculpture department . Since 1969 he has been teaching at the University of California. In 1973 he received a professorship at the International University of Art in Venice .

Mark di Suvero lives and works in Petaluma, California, New York and Chalon-sur-Saône , France. In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 1990 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 2006 he was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design . In 2005 di Suvero received a Heinz Award .

Mark di Suvero's artistic work consists mainly of large sculptures , for which he often uses steel beams . The structural steel remains untreated or is painted - almost always with the red color RAL 3000. He has no classical training as a blacksmith or engineer . Nevertheless, he creates his sculptures himself, supported by a team of employees.
