The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a 1977 from an art teacher Peter Murray established sculpture garden in West Bretton , Wakefield , in West Yorkshire, England.

history

There was no comparable project in the UK in the 1970s . Sculpture parks existed in Europe only in Denmark ( Louisiana Museum of Modern Art ) and in the Netherlands ( Kröller-Müller Museum ). Initially, opposition to the project was considerable. In letters to the editor, the “scrap metal” was insulted as an “insult to the intelligence of taxpayers”. However, the majority of the local population liked the idea and wanted to see more soon. It happened well that two important British sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworthgrew up not far away. A number of sites, the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, are dedicated to this art heritage.

Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth advocated the idea of moving sculptures from the galleries into the open landscape. Moore believed:

"Daylight, sunlight is necessary. (Daylight, sunlight is necessary.) "

Moore continued:

"Sculpture is an art of the open air. (Sculpture is an open-air art.) "

Yorkshire Sculpture Park never had a lot of money to buy works of art, but many artists donated sculptures or made them available on loan . Hundreds of artists from over 40 countries responded to the call and exhibited their works. Many exhibits can be seen permanently in the park, others are only on site for a certain period of time and are then replaced by new works. Today the park has 170 employees and is visited by 400,000 people a year. Admission is free. Therefore, the park is dependent on the income from parking fees.

The atmosphere in the extensive landscape is relaxed:

“Yorkshire Sculpture Park is no ordinary gallery. For example, there are no dehumidifiers and no one will look at you crookedly if your cell phone suddenly rings. It's about art in the open air, exposed to wind and weather, 365 days a year. "

In 2014, Yorkshire Sculpture Park won the UK's largest art award and was named Art Fund Museum of the Year.
