Phillip King PRA (born May 1, 1934 in Tunis , Tunisia ) is a British sculptor . He lives and works in London .

life and work

Phillip King studied Modern Languages ​​at Christ's College, Cambridge University from 1954 to 1957 . From 1957 to 1958 he studied sculpture at St Martin's School of Art in London with Anthony Caro . He worked for a year as an assistant at Henry Moore , following the example of his teacher Caro.

In 1964 his works were shown at the documenta III in Kassel and at the 4th documenta 1968 in the sculpture department . First in the “New Generation” exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, the works of Caro and King were also shown together in the important exhibition Primary Structures in 1966 at the Jewish Museum New York .

Phillip King was Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1980 to 1990 and at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1990 to 1999. From 1999 to 2004 he was President of the Royal Academy of Arts. His work is characterized by creativity and diversity. He has worked in stone, metal, wood, synthetic resin and ceramics, among other things. He is considered to be one of the most innovative and influential sculptors in Great Britain.
