Francis Grant

Sir Francis Grant (born January 18, 1803 in Kilgraston , Scotland, † October 5, 1878 in Melton Mowbray , England) was a Scottish painter of Victorian neoclassicism .

Life

Grant comes from a Scottish gentry family. He was the son of Francis Grant, Laird of Kilgraston. His brother was General Hope Grant . He received his education in Harrow . After initially studying law, he turned to painting. In the beginning he especially painted hunting scenes. In 1834 he exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy and in the following years developed into a portrait painter of the higher circles. Those portrayed included u. a. Queen Victoria with consort, the Prince of Wales , Lord Clyde , Lord Palmerston and Benjamin Disraeli . The portraits of his brother Hope Grant and his daughter Daisy Grant are also known. From 1866 until his death he was President of the Royal Academy of Arts .
