Sir Martin Archer Shee (born December 23, 1769 in Dublin , † August 13, 1850 in Brighton , Sussex) was a portrait painter from Ireland who was President of the Royal Academy of Arts from 1830 to 1850 .

Life

Born into a Catholic Irish family, Shee received his artistic training from the Royal Dublin Society . In 1789 he married Mary Power from Youghal . Shee went to London , where he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts on the recommendation of Joshua Reynolds . He devoted himself to portrait painting, but also painted genre pictures and historical paintings. Shee was made a member of the Royal Academy in 1798. From 1805 he also published poems. Although he worked as a portraitist of the highest circles, his painting was partly overshadowed by his colleague Thomas Lawrence , whose successor as President of the Royal Academy of Arts he succeeded in 1830. From 1842 to 1849 he was also the first president of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. In 1845 he fell ill and since then has lived mostly in Brighton. JMW Turner served as his deputy at the Royal Academy . Shee died in Brighton on August 13, 1850 .
