Sir Gerald Festus Kelly (born April 9, 1879 in London , † January 5, 1972 in Exmouth (Devon) ) was a British painter.

family

Gerald Festus Kelly's father Frederic Festus Kelly (1838-1918) was a pastor in St. Giles , Camberwell , where the young Kelly grew up. His grandfather, also known as Frederic Festus Kelly, was the founder of Kelly's Directories Ltd. His sister, Rose Edith Kelly, was briefly married to Aleister Crowley .

education

Gerald Kelly studied at Eton College and Trinity Hall , Cambridge , and later lived and studied art in Paris . James McNeill Whistler was an early influence. Kelly traveled extensively and visited Spain, America, South Africa and Burma, which inspired a number of paintings of Burmese dancers.

Models

In 1920 he married Lilian Ryan. She became a model of various portraits and was exhibited under the title Jane followed by a Roman number corresponding to the year of the exhibition. Other portrayed were TS Eliot , Ralph Vaughan Williams and Somerset Maugham .

reception

Maugham, a lifelong friend of Kelly, wrote an introduction to a catalog (1950) to an exhibition of Kelly's work. He also regularly portrayed Kelly in his works, as Lionel Hillier in Cakes and Ale , as Frederick Lawson in Of Human Bondage and as O'Malley in His Excellency , presenting him as "the young Irish painter named O'Malley" and him Ashenden dedicated.

Activities, offices

Kelly became a popular painter to the British royal family . In 1930 he was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts , was the custodian of the academy from 1943 to 1945 and was its president from 1949 to 1954. Kelly held a number of official offices, such as B. his membership in the Royal Fine Arts Commission, 1938-1943, and 1945 was beaten to the Knight Bachelor . The artist John Napper (1916-2001) worked as his assistant. In 1950 he was elected to the National Academy of Design as an honorary academic.
