South of Scotland Football League

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The South of Scotland Football League (SSFL) is next to the East of Scotland Football League one of the two lowest, sixth-rate, leagues in the Scottish professional league system. Both are in the hierarchy below the, also semi-professional, Lowland Football League . In contrast to the fifth-rate Lowland Football League , the fifth-rate Highland Football League has no substructure because of the lower population density of northern Scotland. The catchment area of the South of Scotland Football League is southern and southwestern Scotland .

The league, which was founded in 1946, was not linked to the professional league system until the league reform in 2013. Since the 2014/15 season, a sporting promotion to a higher league (through relegation) has been possible. The champions of the league were the reserve of FC Stranraer in 2018/19 , as a reserve team they were not eligible for promotion to the Lowland Football League .

Member clubs are eligible to play in the qualifying round of the Scottish FA Cup .

At the start of the 2019/20 season, 16 teams competed in the league, but Dumfries YMCA withdrew his team after 12 games. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , SSFL game operations were interrupted for an indefinite period on March 13, 2020, and the season (point and cup games) was declared null and void on May 4, 2020 ("null & void").
