history

The club was founded in 1879 , making it one of the oldest clubs in the South of Scotland League. The association was founded by several members of the Catholic parishes of St. Cuthbert and St. Andrew . Before going to church on a Sunday morning in 1879, around seven or eight male members of the two parishes decided to start a football club. Among them were known by name Michael Crossan, Tom Branney, William Flannigan, James Crossan, George Murphy and William Murray. The first president to be elected was Robert McMonies and he was joined by George Murphy as secretary and William Flannigan as treasurer. The membership fee for the first year was £ 3. The Wanderers played their first competitive games in 1881 in the Churchill Cup and from 1889 in the Law Cup. In 1892 the St. Cuthbert Cup was organized. The Wanderers were the first team from southern Scotland to win an organized league championship, the Stewartry League in 1895/96. In the 1927/28 season, the team won the South of Scotland Football League for the first time . Also known as the Saints , the club played for the first time in the Scottish FA Cup in the 1924-25 season . After a 5-0 win over the Peebles Rovers in the replay, they reached the second round. In the 1938/39 season , the Wanderers played in Hampden Park against FC Queen's Park .
