Kirkcudbright [ kərˈkuːbriː ] ( Gaelic : Cill Chuithbeirt ) is a place in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland and has 3352 inhabitants (as of 2011).

The site is 25 miles west of Dumfries near the confluence of the River Dee and the Solway Firth .

High Banks is a 30 m long rock outcrop with petroglyphs south of Kirkcudbright.

In 1455, Kirkcudbright was founded as the Royal Burgh .

The composer Cecil Coles († 1918) was born in Kirkcudbright in 1888 .
