Andy Goldsworthy , OBE , (born July 26, 1956 in Cheshire , England ) is an artist who uses naturally occurring materials to create his mostly quickly perishable works and documents them with the help of photography . He is considered one of the most important representatives of nature art , a variant of land art .

Andy Goldsworthy is the son of Muriel and F. Allin Goldsworthy (1929-2001). His father was a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Leeds . He grew up in rural Yorkshire . From 1974 to 1975 he studied in Bradford at the College of Art and from 1975 to 1978 at Preston Polytechnic , since 1992 integrated into the University of Central Lancashire . There he took part in seminars less and less, instead he was drawn to the nearby coast of the Irish Sea , where he made his first experiments in and with natural materials.

Goldsworthy's works are characterized by their transience . He works exclusively with natural materials that he finds on the spot, such as stones, flower petals or wood - always without artificial "man-made" aids. He only uses thorns and sticks or grass fibers to attach leaves and branches and documents his sometimes daringly fragile works of art with artistically high-quality photographs; For example, he scatters flower petals in a river and images them with his Hasselblad camera shortly before they finally melt away. Another example is the Forked Twigs photo in Water-Bentham (1979).

In another work, he leaves elaborately arranged mussel spirals on the beach to the tide and thus returns them to the sea. It is not his intention to leave traces in nature, rather he gives back the artifacts of nature. He demonstrates their beauty by uniting their shapes and colors into harmoniously composed objects for a few hours , but then leaving them to natural destruction. For Goldsworthy, the hidden mysticism of the place and its spiritually influenced perception also play a major role; he allows himself to be influenced by his surroundings and also wants to experience the place itself as a work of art.

For him, the most spectacular demonstration of his art to date took place in London when, on the day of the summer solstice in 2001, he transported thirteen large snowballs in refrigerated cars into the city and distributed them on the streets of London. He observed the reactions of the people and the passing snow, his day-long work is documented in the photo book Sommerschnee .

Goldsworthy was married to Judith Gregson since 1982 and has four children with her. After his separation he lived alone for a few years until he met his new life partner, the art historian Tina Fiske, who initially helped him organize the inventory of his recordings. He lives with her in Scotland ( Penpont , Dumfries and Galloway ).

reception

It was his art books and less his exhibitions that made Goldsworthy a silent star on the international art scene. In his studio he archives all the recordings of his work that he has already made in Scotland, the USA, France, Japan, at the North Pole and in Australia.

Goldsworthy and his work were portrayed by the Munich filmmaker and cameraman Thomas Riedelsheimer in 2001 in the 90-minute documentary Rivers and Tides (Eng. "River of Time", literally: "Rivers and Tides"). The camera observes the manufacturing process of Goldworthy's Land Art in four countries and four seasons. The film received the German Camera Prize 2001 and the German Film Critics Prize 2001 , among others . The film music was contributed by Fred Frith .
The same director released the themed documentary Leaning into the Wind - Andy Goldsworthy in German cinemas on December 14, 2017 .

Quotes

" I find some of my new works disturbing, just as I find nature as a whole disturbing. The landscape is often perceived as pastoral, pretty, beautiful - something to be enjoyed as a backdrop to your weekend before going back to the nitty-gritty of urban life. But anybody who works the land knows it's not like that. Nature can be harsh - difficult and brutal, as well as beautiful. You couldn't walk five minutes from here without coming across something that is dead or decaying. "

- Andy Goldsworthy, 2007

" One of the beauties of art is that it reflects an artist's entire life. What I've learned over the past 30 years is really beginning to inform what I make. I hope that process continues until I die. "

- Andy Goldsworthy, 2007
