Helen "Elena" Escobedo (born July 28, 1934 in Mexico City ; † September 16, 2010 there ) was a Mexican sculptor and installation artist .

biography

Escobedo's father was Mexican, her mother English. She herself first studied sculpture in her hometown from 1950 to 1951 at Mexico City College (today: Universidad de las Américas ), among others with Germán Cueto , and then until 1954 as a scholarship holder at the Royal College of Art in London up to a master’s degree. The works of the internationally active artist are predominantly of monumental size. Escobedo uses industrial and natural materials. She made a total of 30 sculptures in public spaces , including Mexico, Canada, the United States, Cuba, England, New Zealand and Israel. In addition to her studio in Mexico, she also has one in Berlin , previously in Hamburg .

From 1958 to 1962 she headed the Museum of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), from 1981 to 1982 she was the technical director of the Museo Nacional de Arte and from 1982 to 1984 director of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City. From 1985 to 1989 she worked as a curator for the UNAM Museum for international exhibitions.

In 1986 she became an associate member of the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique and was awarded a Guggenheim scholarship in 1991 .

Exhibitions

Escobedo has exhibited her work in 35 solo exhibitions and in more than 100 group exhibitions at home and abroad.
