Germán Gutiérrez Cueto

Germán Gutiérrez Cueto (born February 8 or 9, 1883 in Mexico City , † February 14, 1975 ) was a Mexican sculptor and painter. He joined the Academia de Artes in 1968 and is one of the founding members.

biography

On his father's side, Gutiérrez Cueto came from a wealthy, traditionally socially committed and intellectual family who originally came from Cantabria , Spain . His mother was Mexican. From 1916 to 1917 he learned in Spain by his cousin María Blanchard first the Modern Art . After a short stay at the Academia de San Carlos , he continued his sculptural studies autodidactically in 1919 .

He married the artist Lola Cueto (1897–1978), with whom he had two children. With her he went to Paris from 1927 to 1932, where he made some acquaintances in the art scene, in particular with the artist group " Cercle et Carré ". It was in Paris that he and Lola first came into contact with the manufacture of hand puppets and puppetry .

After spending five years in Europe, he turned to abstract sculpture. He also founded a doll company with Lola. They also toured Mexico with their hand puppets. Together with Leopoldo Méndez , Manuel Maples Arce and Fermín Revueltas Sánchez , he founded the artists' association Los Estridentistas .

After separating from Lola Fuego in 1936, Germán married María Fernández Galán . His daughter Mireya Cueto , born in his first marriage in 1922, was also a well-known puppeteer, writer and dramaturge .
