Lola Cueto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dolores "Lola" Cueto (born March 2, 1897 in Azcapotzalco , † January 24, 1978 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican painter, graphic artist , doll maker and player.

The stage name Lola Cueto , by which she became known, is composed of the pet form of her first name and the last name of her husband, the Mexican painter and sculptor Germán Cueto . The sources make different statements about the actual surname.

Their marriage to Gérman gave birth to their daughters Ana Maria and Mireya . Mireya (1922-2013) was also a well-known puppeteer, writer and dramaturge .

From 1927 to 1932 Lola and her husband went to Paris , where they made contact with the local art scene. It was here that she and Gérman first came into contact with the manufacture of hand puppets and puppetry . After their return, the two founded a doll company in Mexico and toured Mexico with their hand puppets. In 1936 Lola and Gérman separated from each other.

With her numerous graphics and images, Lola Cueto became a renowned member of the Mexican art community and exhibited her work several times nationally and internationally. She taught at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), which emerged from the Academia de San Carlos . She also made a name for herself as a designer and manufacturer of hand puppets and as a puppeteer at the Teatro Náhuatl . The puppet theater developed into a family tradition and is now being continued in the fourth generation.
