Kenneth Armitage

Kenneth Armitage CBE RA (born July 18, 1916 in Leeds , Great Britain , † January 22, 2002 in London ) was a British sculptor who is best known for his bronze figures. With his sculptures he mainly depicted human figures.

Armitage studied from 1934 to 1937 at the College of Art in Leeds, then at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. The early work is influenced by Egyptian and Cycladic sculptures as well as by the work of Henry Moore . In 1952 he took part in the Venice Biennale . In 1955 he was a participant in documenta 1 in Kassel .

In 1956 he won a competition for a war memorial in Krefeld . In 1958 he was honored at the 29th Venice Biennale as “the best young (under 45) British sculptor”. The exhibition is shown in the following museums in 1958 and 1959: Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris , Wallraf-Richartz-Museum , Cologne , Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels , Kunsthaus Zürich , and Boymans Museum, Rotterdam . In 1959 Armitage was represented as an artist with his works at documenta II and in 1964 at documenta III in Kassel. In 1960 his sculptures were exhibited in the Kestner Society , Hanover , together with sculptures by Lynn Chadwick .

In 1969, Kenneth Armitage was named Commander of the British Empire by the Queen . In 1994 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Arts .

His sculptures are exhibited in the most important galleries and museums in the world. These include the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York , the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris , the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Hessian State Museum Darmstadt and the Wolfsburg Art Museum .

Kenneth Armitage was buried in London after his death in 2002. In the year before she died, Armitage's hometown of Leeds acquired Both Arms to make it a core part of the design of their new Millennium Square. His work also got a major retrospective in the City Gallery there.
