history
The Rotebühlplatz goes back to the Alte Postplatz , where a Thurn-und-Taxis post office was once located. The square was known as the “old” Postplatz from 1851, when a new post office was built between Fürstenstrasse and Bolzstrasse. The plans to redesign the square and the surrounding streets go back to the 1930s. The square got its present form in the period after the Second World War . A historic street island with an Art Nouveau pavilion and fountain once located on the square was not removed until the early 1960s.
The street area at the old Postplatz was given the name Rotebühlplatz in 1960. The town gate to Calwer Chaussee, which was once there, was adorned with a striking red image of a saint, which is why the gate was called the “Rotebildtor” by the population. By shifting the sound, the red picture became the red Bühl .
