The Lucie-Flechtmann Square is an approximately 10,800 square meter site at the Westerstraße in the Neustadt district of the City of Bremen . After an initiative to revitalize the square was formed in 2013, cultural events take place there again and again.

The square is between Westerstrasse , Heinrich-Bierbaum-Strasse and Grünenstrasse , opposite the Hachez production building .

Surname

The fishmonger Johanna Lucie Henriette Flechtmann (1850–1921), known as Fisch-Luzie , was a popular and quick-witted original in Bremen's Neustadt district . She lived at Grosse Annenstrasse 96 and later again at Neustadtsbahnhof. Here she ran a trade in fish and clothing. From her two marriages she had 17 children to look after. The Fischhandlung Flechtmann GmbH existed until 1998 , operated by their sons Hermann and Johann. Lucie Flechtmann was also committed to the football club FC Stern Bremen and she was probably the first woman in Germany to sponsor a football club.

history

When it was inaugurated in 2003, Lucie-Flechtmann-Platz was intended as a “new central square for the Neustadt”. The square was previously used as a commercial property and parking lot. After the Grünenkamp was sold, the city of Bremen acquired the area of today's square in order to design it as a replacement area for the population in the Neustadt. The cost of the construction project was one million euros, which was raised in equal parts by the Senator for Construction, Environment and Transport and the Senator for Economics and Ports .

In 2013, the Lucie Initiative built raised beds and planted flowers and vegetables there. From June 2013, the city initially released the square for temporary use with raised beds on the pavement.

Ideas for further development are a gardening of the square, the creation of green areas , unsealing of the soil, a playground and a recreational area for young and old people, thus creating a place for exchange and culture.

initiative

In 2013, neighbors joined forces and founded the initiative Ab geht die Lucie (short: Lucie ). Lucie came about through the idea and the commitment of some neighbors in the adjoining senior citizens' home and the neighboring daycare center . With the support of the Neustadt Advisory Board, the Bremer Bürgerstiftung , the community action Creating Playrooms and the Autonomous Architecture Atelier , Lucie was opened with a 2013 summer party.

The KulturPflanzen association emerged from the Lucie initiative , with the aim of redesigning the square. In 2016, the association was awarded the Hilde Adolf Prize for its commitment .
