history

According to geological finds, the settlement of Alkenrath seems to have begun as early as the Neolithic ; there is evidence of finds of blades and arrowheads. Grave fields from the Hallstatt period could also be salvaged.

The first documentary mention of Alkenrath is in 1458 as Alfkenroide . Franz Gruß suspects an etymological connection between this mention and the name Adolfsrodung , which was already used in the Duchy of Berg , but which Albrecht Brendler considers speculation.

From a political point of view, Alkenrath is the youngest part of Leverkusen. It was founded in 1953 in the course of post-war development. Large blocks of flats were built in the northern area of the district, the rest mainly consist of systematically laid out semi-detached houses . In 1957 the place received a Catholic church and in 1959 a Protestant parish hall. In 1960 the place was again greatly expanded. Since 1975 Alkenrath has belonged to district III of the city of Leverkusen.
