The Dhünn is a 40.02 km long, orographically left and southern tributary of the Wupper . It rises in the Bergisches Land and flows into the Wupper in Leverkusen , immediately before it flows into the Rhine itself . It is the longest tributary of the Wupper and flows through the Oberbergischer Kreis , the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis and the independent city of Leverkusen. In April 2010 the Dhünn was declared the first “barrier-free river” in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Dhünn has two source arms.

A longer source river, called Große Dhünn , rises near the two Wipperfürth villages Peddenpohl and Ritzenhaufe , flows in a straight line through their wooded brook valley, takes in the Purder Bach and the Mausbach and is dammed in the Große Dhünn pre- dam of the Great Dhünntalsperre .

A shorter arm, called Kleine Dhünn , rises at Hückeswagen - Dörpfeld on the Wermelskirchen border, flows through the town of Dhünn and is dammed in the Kleine Dhünn reservoir of the Great Dhünntalsperre.

Course of the Dhünn

After the two spring arms have united in the Great Dhünntalsperre, they flow as Dhünn via Altenberg and Odenthal to Leverkusen .

In the past, water power was often used along the river . In the meantime all weirs below the Great Dhünntalsperre have been dismantled.

According to various maps, an arm of the Dhünn used to flow directly into the Rhine. The arm of the Wupper was folded a few meters in the 19th century and has since then flowed into the Wupper just before the (Rhine) estuary, while the arm of the Rhine no longer exists. From 1910 on, dikes took place. Between 1968 and 1971 the course of the river was changed again to make way for the Bayer landfill. Today the Dhünn joins the Wupper north of Leverkusen-Rheindorf . A few years ago the Dhünn was renatured in a longer section in Leverkusen .

Renaturation

By moving the Dhünn around the weir of the scythe hammer in April 2010, the Dhünn was declared the first "barrier-free river" in North Rhine-Westphalia. This means that the 24-kilometer stretch of water from the mouth of the Dhünn to the dam of the Great Dhünn Dam is again freely accessible for fish and small organisms. The fish can get to their spawning grounds in the water system of the Dhünn and their tributaries unhindered.

The Dhünn as Duna of the Nibelungen saga

According to the controversial thesis of the private scholar Heinz Ritter-Schaumburg , the Dhünn and not the Danube are to be equated with the Duna of the Nibelungen saga. He points out that the Dhünn flowed into the Rhine until the 19th century, before it was diverted to the neighboring Wupper. Around 1190 it was still called Dune . In his opinion, the old duna can only refer to this dune, today's Dhünn. Ritter relies on the Thidrek saga . Its conclusions are rejected by most of the experts.
