Hilgen is the largest district of the city of Burscheid in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia and is located on today's federal highway 51 . The name comes from saints and is said to come from a saint's house or picture of saints that stood on what is now called “Altenhilgen”.

The first mention in 1510 can be found in a tax list of the church in Wermelskirchen . There it says, harvest up den Hilgen gives 3 quarters and a cup (oats?) As a fee for his land, which is in the local area of Wermelskirchen.

There is a Lutheran Reformed, a Free Evangelical, a Catholic and a New Apostolic Church congregation. There is also a primary school, four kindergartens , a sports hall and an artificial turf sports field. Important organizations in Hilgen are the rifle club (Hilgener Schützenverein 1923 eV), the sports club (Turngemeinde Hilgen 04 eV) and a fire brigade of the volunteer fire brigade . There are also a Sparkasse and a bank branch, two hotels and several restaurants, cafes and grocery stores, general practitioners, dentists and pharmacies in the place.

On the former railway line Wuppertal-Oberbarmen-Opladen , a footpath and cycle path has been created that leads from Hilgen via Wermelskirchen and Bergisch Born to Remscheid-Lennep . The opposite direction, i.e. to Leverkusen-Opladen, is being planned.
