Straß is a district of Herzogenrath in the Aachen city region . Straß, consisting of the districts of Kohlberg, Pesch, Heggen, Straßer Feld and Maubach, lies between Alt-Herzogenrath and Kohlscheid on the western edge of the Wurmtal.

The place is located directly on the German-Dutch border, shared with Kerkrade the new road (Dutch: Nieuwstraat). In the past, there were lanes in both directions on both sides of the border, separated by a fence, later only by a 40 cm high wall. Today there is a common road. The east lane is essentially German, the west Dutch. Five roundabouts form the connection to the Dutch or German road network. The signs are partly in German and partly in Dutch. There is now a cycle path on both sides of the street. The Eurode Business Center (EBC) is on this street . The central section of the office building is also exactly on the border and is home to both German and Dutch companies.

In the east, Straß borders on the Wurmtal , in which the near-surface hard coal deposits were used from the Middle Ages to the modern age.

The elongated structure of the district on the edge of the river valley and the location on the old overland connection road from Roermond to Aachen gave it the character of a street village, which was probably the reason for the name.

The patron saint of the Catholic parish is St. Joseph .

traffic

Strass does not have its own train station. The closest train stations are Kohlscheid and Herzogenrath on the Aachen – Mönchengladbach line . The next motorway junctions are Aachen-Laurensberg on the A 4 and Broichweiden on the A 44 .

Until the early 1960s, a tram line, which at times also served to transport coal, ran through Straß and connected the place with Herzogenrath and Pannesheide / Kohlscheid. Currently (2007) the place is connected by the ASEAG bus lines 47, 57 and 147 with Herzogenrath, Kohlscheid and Aachen. There are also night bus lines on weekends.

Mining

In Straß and on the Kohlberg there was the former Voccart coal mine as well as a whole series of medieval and early modern trades (shafts, Erbstollen, Pingen) for coal extraction. Mining remained largely under the control of the Rolduc Monastery until the end of the 18th century . Later he came into the sphere of influence of the Association for Hard Coal Construction in the Wurmrevier , in order to be incorporated into the Eschweiler Mining Association in 1907 .

Sports

There are several sports clubs in Straß. Among other things, there is a soccer and a shooting club. The football club is called SpVgg 1928 Straß and received an artificial turf pitch in 2013/14. In order to realize the artificial turf project, the association had to raise 75,000 euros of its own funds. In order to be able to raise this sum, the association has been collecting for several years. The project was not implemented in 2011 as originally planned, but in 2013/14.
