Niederbardenberg is a village in the Aachen city region and a district of Herzogenrath .

geography

As a district of Herzogenrath, Niederbardenberg is located southeast of the city on a mountain. In the southwest, Niederbardenberg borders the Würselen district of Bardenberg .

The place consists of the districts Wefelen, Feldgen, Kämerhöf, Schmiedstraße, Siedlung, houses Jüd and Forstum.

history

From 1800 to 1815 Niederbardenberg belonged to the canton of Eschweiler in the French Département de la Roer , then it came to Prussia and became a municipality in the district of Aachen . The Niederbardenberg part of the municipality had the postal code 5124 Niederbardenberg from 1961 to 1971 with the possible postal addition / via Herzogenrath . On January 1, 1972 Niederbardenberg was separated from the municipality of Bardenberg and incorporated into the city of Herzogenrath.

During the Second World War the National Socialists set up the Hühnernest camp in Niederbardenberg, which served as a collection camp in 1941 and 1942 and as a labor camp for forced laborers from 1942 to 1944. It became known above all for the forced relocation of more than 200 Jews from Cologne, because their living space there and possibly intact was to be cleared for German citizens after the air raids of May 31, 1942. On July 19 of that year, 272 Jewish residents of the Niederbardenberg camp were brought to the Cologne exhibition center, in order to be deported for the most part to the Minsk ghetto .

church

Before St. Antonius became its own parish, the districts of Kämerhöf, Feldgen and Häuser Jüd belonged to the parish of St. Gertrud in Herzogenrath and the rest of the place belonged to the parish of Peter and Paul in Bardenberg. The parish boundary cut the place. The intersection is still clearly recognizable today, as it runs right through the Pfarrer-Emonds-Haus and the streets Blücherstraße and Kämerhöfer Straße begin and end there. After a separate parish was proclaimed, the districts of Niederbardenberg were included in the new parish, with the exception of a part of the so-called settlement, which still belongs to the parish Peter and Paul today. 80 years after the consecration of the parish church of St. Antonius, the parish of St. Antonius was merged with the parishes of the Assumption of Mary Herzogenrath and St. Gertrud / Herzogenrath-Afden on May 5th, 2005 to form the large parish of St. Gertrud.

With the merger, the parish council and church council were also merged and re-elected.

Next to the church is the "Pfarrer-Emonds-Haus", a hall for up to 80 people. The parish also has a parish meadow that is used every two years for the Antonius Festival. The St. Antonius Schützen clubhouse is also located here.

activities

Although the village may seem quite tranquil, there are many events throughout the year. The AWO organizes a children's carnival party every year. In the Pfarrer-Emonds-Haus a carnival meeting has been organized by the parish carnival every year since 1995 on the weekend before fat Thursday.

When the days get longer, the time of the May boys comes, who march around the houses on May night and call out the girls of the village. The traditional May Festival takes place on the second weekend in May, and several hundred guests come every year for three evenings.

In summer the two rifle clubs celebrate their shooting festival, the Hubertus riflemen on the shooting range "Im Winkel" always on the 2nd weekend in August, the Antonius riflemen on the Pfarrwiese always on the 2nd weekend in July. The "Antoniusfest", the former parish festival, also takes place there every two years.

At the end of September / beginning of October the May Boys have been holding an Oktoberfest for several years.

Every Saturday around November 11th, the Martins Committee organizes a Martins parade through the streets of the village, followed by a Martins fire. The whole village is decorated with St. Martin's lanterns and window pictures. In the kindergarten and the adjoining fire station, mulled wine and other drinks are served afterwards. The "Weckmännchen" are free for the children.

Infrastructure

There are three stops on the ASEAG bus line 21, which stops on weekdays in and on weekends, or outside the village in the evenings: Vier Jahreszeiten, Niederbardenberg and Häuser Jüd. A timetable information is available on the ASEAG website itself.

In addition, the school bus from the Bierstraß primary school and the school bus from the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium Broichweiden stop at these stops as required.

education

The church kindergarten, which is located in the building of the former school, is the only on-site educational institution.
