Herzogenrath, St. Josef

St. Josef is a neo-Gothic Catholic parish church in Herzogenrath , district of Straß . The architect Josef Kleesattel designed the brick building in the form of a basilica with three aisles and no transept, with a front yoke and apse .

The church tower rises on the western front above the first yoke of the right aisle.

history

The area of today's parish of St. Josef in Herzogenrath-Straß belonged to the parish of St. Lambert in Kerkrade in the diocese of Liège since ancient times . With the incorporation of the areas on the left bank of the Rhine into the French state and the French Concordat of 1801, the parish of St. Lambert came to the newly founded diocese of Aachen. Through the Agreement of Aachen in 1816, the area of today's city of Herzogenrath became part of the Kingdom of Prussia , but it was not until 1821 that the diocese of Aachen was repealed in the papal bull De salute animarum , the current parish of St. Josef - Straß was separated from St. Lambert, the area of the Parish of the Assumption of Mary in Herzogenrath closed and thus part of the re-established Archdiocese of Cologne . With the signing of the Prussian Concordat in 1929, the re-establishment of the Aachen diocese was established, to which Straß has belonged ever since.

In the parish of the Assumption of Mary in the city of Herzogenrath, several attempts were made in the years before and around 1900 to expand or build a new parish church. During this time, however, the population of the "Upper Town" had grown due to the expansion of mining so that more believers lived there than in the historic city. And so in April 1902 the residents of Straß, Neustraß, Maubach, Gasse, Kohlberg, Heggen and Pesch demanded that the new parish church from Herzogenrath be moved closer to Straß, but this was rejected by Herzogenrath.

The new pastor of Herzogenrath then divided up the accumulated church building funds and Josef Kleesattel was commissioned to design a branch church . Construction began in 1908 and the consecration took place on December 8, 1909 . In March 1909, an application was made to the Archdiocese of Cologne for their own property management, whereupon St. Joseph was made a parish at Christmas 1911.

Parish

St. Josef is a parish in the deanery Herzogenrath / Merkstein of the diocese of Aachen.

Building description and equipment

The design by Josef Kleesattel has largely been preserved to this day. The church is a three-aisled basilica with 5 bays, a front bay and a choir apse. In the west, the central nave is slightly pulled forward and a small apse is attached to the left aisle, followed by the sacristy in the east. Until today, extensive repairs had to be carried out on the construction, as the earlier mining resulted in subsidence.

The interior of the church dragged on for many years. In 1911, the Way of the Cross, designed by the Franciscans from Bleijerheide, was installed and the Maria-Hilf altar was installed in the left aisle, but the high altar was not erected until 1923. Around 1930 the statues St. Petrus and St. Paulus followed and the organ was built, which was replaced in 1967 by a new organ by Heinz Wilbrand.

St. Josef experienced a checkered history with its bells. At the beginning of 1914 a ringing of 3 bells was achieved, in mid-1917 the two larger ones were given as "metal donations". At the end of 1926, two new bells could be installed, which then had to be delivered in mid-1942. After the war, only the Sacred Heart Bell was left from the original peal. In 1952 it was possible to "borrow" an H-bell from the eastern regions, cast by Johannes Breutelt in 1673 from a bell cemetery near Hamburg , to which two new bells from the bell foundry Petit and the Edelbrock brothers in Gescher near Münster were added in 1962 (E-bell St. Joseph, G-bell Mother of God).
