Berta Kals (* as Berta Antwerp on April 19, 1923 in Steckenborn ; † January 20, 2016 in Munich ) was a German artist. She became known for her creations of time and society critical Christmas cribs .

Life

The Catholic was committed to modern, time-critical nativity scenes. She lived and worked in Aachen-Haaren .

Kals was a pioneer and pioneer of "peace nativity scenes" in the 1970 / 80s. The best-known work was the “Raketenkrippe”, followed by over 50 other nativity scenes on various topics such as the problem of the north-south divide, endangering the environment, a “nativity scene in the slum” or “secular Christmas” and were shown in exhibitions in the USA , South America, Africa and almost all European countries and have permanent places such as Coventry Cathedral and several museums. She also designed works such as the fountain at St. Germanus in Aachen.

For her work she was offered the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2000 . Berta Kals refused in protest against the deportation of a Kurdish refugee from the Haaren traveling church asylum . With her spectacular objection she could not prevent the deportation, but managed to get a supraregional working group to formulate new standards for the assessment of psychotraumatized people (SBPM) . After her "protégé" returned in 2002, she also received her award.

In addition, she received the prize for professional artists from the Bishop of Liège on the Arskrippana and the "Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg Prize for exemplary nativity scene".

Berta Kals was married to the economist and writer Hans Kals .
