Nativity scene South Tyrol

The ArsKRIPPANA (original spelling, also ArsKrippana; formerly Krippana ) is a year-round nativity scene exhibition in Losheim in the Eifel near the border with Belgium . It belongs to the Ardennes Cultur Boulevard . With an exhibition area of 2,500 m², you will find the largest nativity scene exhibition in Europe. Contemporary, socially critical and modern representations of the world of the nativity scene are shown.

The name is a pseudo- Latin construction from Latin ars "art" and crib , probably for " nativity art".

Emergence

The "Krippana" was from 1978 to 1986 in a former dairy in Monschau-Höfen . Due to problems with the statutory fire protection at this location, it was moved to Losheim and reopened in 1989 as "ArsKrippana". The Krippana has so far shown over 5000 cribs, up to 300 cribs from all over the world at the same time: life-size cribs, in miniature, made of plaster of paris, wood, metal, ceramics, pebbles and other materials.

The basic idea was to exhibit church cribs not only at Christmas time, but throughout the year. In the beginning, the nativity scenes were only shown ten months a year in courtyards, at Christmas time they returned to their owners and their home churches. For several years, the Krippana has been in the foreground in addition to church cribs, Spanish landscape cribs and Shona art from Zimbabwe, as well as annually changing special exhibitions.

In the same building is the ArsFIGURA , a puppet exhibition that shows ArsShona , the stone works of art from Zimbabwe, and next door is the model railway exhibition ArsTECNICA , all of which are part of the Ardennes Cultur Boulevard .

Shona art

Shona art

The ArsKrippana shows sculptures of the older and contemporary art of the largest population group in Zimbabwe. The cribs by various artists are made of stone, especially serpentine .

Spanish landscape cribs

In Spain there were depictions of the birth of Christ as early as the end of the Middle Ages. However, the subject did not gain real popularity until the Baroque period . A distinction is made between two traditions: the home nativity scene, in which local customs and anachronisms are found, and the oriental nativity scene, which, following the impulse of the romantic trend of the 19th century, brings the biblical events closer to the beginning of the age.
