The Scheffel-Gymnasium is a high school in Lahr / Black Forest ( Baden-Württemberg ). It is the oldest secondary school between Rastatt and Freiburg . There was a Latin school in Lahr since the middle of the 17th century . Because the influx of students, the educational needs of the citizens of the up-and-coming commercial and industrial city of Lahr and the traditional canon of subjects were no longer sufficient and the new sovereign, Elector Karl Friedrich , wanted to see the expansion of the school system given priority, the Scheffel-Gymnasium was the forerunner of the Scheffel-Gymnasium founded a pedagogy in Lahr.

The school remained essentially a humanistic grammar school until the end of the 1960s and was expanded into a grammar school with a wide range of input languages ​​in 1970-80 and developed into the largest grammar school in Lahr with over 900 students.

Since the year 2000 the Scheffel-Gymnasium Lahr has responded to the political, social, economic and cultural changes and challenges with new educational offers; instead, ancient Greek was abolished.

Because the school plays a pioneering role in quality assurance and school development, has above-average professional competence, an extraordinary commitment of the teaching staff and has experience with gifted students, it was chosen as the first South Baden school when selecting the 4 high schools for the introduction of regional gifted students.

Scheffelgymnasium Lahr

At the Scheffel-Gymnasium, English is compulsorily taught from grade five. From grade seven onwards, the pupils are sometimes taught bilingually . In the seventh grade, history is taught in English. The subject of social studies is added in grade eight. In grades nine and ten, only one subject is taught in English again. These are in class nine biology and in class ten GWG.

In the sixth grade, either Latin or French is added as a second foreign language. A third foreign language is not compulsory. However, Italian or Latin can be chosen. As an alternative to this, more science classes are offered.

The Scheffel-Gymnasium is a regional center for the promotion of gifted children . Proof of giftedness is provided through a standardized test and additional procedures. The admission procedure is two-stage: IQ value and admission interview.

The Scheffel-Gymnasium is one of 5 support schools in Baden-Württemberg for the introduction to molecular biology initiated by the Ministry of Culture and the Robert Bosch Foundation.

The Lahr Student Engineering Academy is a project of the Scheffel Gymnasium Lahr with the Offenburg University and the companies Berger Lahr , Herrenknecht Schwanau and Zehnder Lahr.

The Scheffel-Gymnasium works together with the Science House in Rust and has been represented annually at the Science Days in Europa-Park since 2005 with its own exhibition and presentation stand.
