Eckhard Wirbelauer

Eckhard Wirbelauer (born December 24, 1962 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German ancient historian .

Eckhard Wirbelauer studied Ancient History, Latin Philology and Middle Latin Philology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1992 he received his doctorate in Freiburg with Hans-Joachim Gehrke with the dissertation The Disputes about the Roman Episcopate in Late Antiquity . Since 1991 he has been working as a research assistant at the University of Freiburg, since 1992 as a research assistant to Jochen Martin . In 1998 he became with the font Kephallenia and Ithaca. Habilitation in historical-geographical and source-critical studies on two islands in the Ionian Sea . Then he was a private lecturer and university lecturer in Freiburg . In 2004 he became professor of Greek history at the Université Marc Bloch de Strasbourg , and in 2007 of Roman history.

With Hans-Joachim Gehrke he headed the sub-area Roman-Imperial and Regional Identities and their interplay in the Eastern Roman Empire of the Collaborative Research Center 541 of the German Research Foundation , Identities and Alterities. The function of alterity for the constitution and construction of identity in Freiburg. For the Monumenta Germaniae Historica he edited the "Gesta Pontificum Romanorum" Volume 2. He is co-editor of the Saeculum yearbook . Wirbelauer is committed to tri-national courses in the "European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities (EUCOR)".
