geography

location

Neuhofen is located in the Upper Rhine Plain on the lower terrace on the northwestern edge of a peninsula-shaped ridge of the high bank zone. The municipality is part of the "Pfälzische Rheinauen" conservation area .

Rehbach

The Rehbach is of particular importance for the development and the present day townscape of Neuhofen . It is not a natural body of water, but an artificial branch of the Speyerbach , which was used for mills and for drifting wood. A bridge west of the Rehhütte, over which the Rehbach crosses the Ranschgraben , also testifies to the unnatural origin .

In the Neuhofen district, the Rehbach used to flow from Schifferstadt in the southwest via the mill at the Rehhütte to Neuhofen. Here it flowed past the Gässelbach and the cemetery to the Unterwald over the forest mill there and finally into the Rhine at Rheingönheim . The Gässelbach (today Burggasse ) is a street that flowed into the Rehbach and which was the nucleus of Neuhofen. Here water was taken and laundry was washed. Later there were washing areas with meadows for bleaching laundry in the area of today's partnership area .

In 1975 the Rehbach was diverted due to heavy pollution and the associated odor nuisance. It now flows northwards from the Rehhütte along the B 9 . From the bridge to Limburgerhof it turns in a long arc to the east and then flows over the monkey meadows north of the Unterwald between Neuhofen and Ludwigshafen-Rheingönheim. From the forest mill it follows its old course to the Rhine again. Thanks to the construction of sewage treatment plants in the neighboring communities, the Rehbach is now cleaner than it was before it was built. The former Rehbachbett now serves under the name Rehbachwanderweg as pedestrian and bicycle through the town. He also left his mark on Neuhofen in the names Rehbachschule , Rehbachhalle , Rehbachstrasse and with the Rehbachfest .

history

Events

The later Neuhofen came into the possession of its founders on May 9, 1194 through a document issued on the Trifels by Emperor Heinrich VI . (“Emperor Heinrich VI. Declares that through his hands, Abbot Gottfried von Weißenburg with his fellow brothers and ministers, the Hofgut in Medenheim and Rechholz, which Eberhard von Ried from the Weissenburg Monastery carried as fief , to Abbot Herman von Himmerod and his monastery as property ") Neuhofen was first mentioned by name in 1209 ( Nova Curia ) in a document from the Bishop of Speyer on the occasion of a dispute between the Himmerod monastery and the Palatinate farmers of Mutterstadt . Permission to build a church in Neuhofen was granted in 1318 by Bishop Emich von Speyer. The patron saint of the Church is St. Michael.

The Himmerod monastery sold its last property in Neuhofen on May 2, 1513 for 2000 gold guilders. During the Thirty Years' War Neuhofen was plundered, destroyed and the population terrorized several times. The residents moved to the neighboring cities. Few families returned after the war, Huguenots moved there. From 1797 to 1815 Neuhofen belonged to the French Republic ( Département du Mont-Tonnerre ) like the whole of the Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine . In the middle of the 19th century, the Palatinate Ludwig Railway to Saarbrücken was built by Paul Camille von Denis . A train station was built on the Friedensau between Mutterstadt and Neuhofen. The Limburgerhof community was founded from the districts of Neuhofen, Mutterstadt, Rheingönheim and Schifferstadt around the train station. Neuhofen loses 238 hectares, including its district Rehhütte. The Rehbach was diverted in 1975, it was moved out of the place.

Population development

Neuhofen had 200 people around 1585, which fell to the historic low of 28 after the end of the Thirty Years' War . In the First World War were 87 soldiers in the Second World War, 188 soldiers. According to the census, around 1950 there were 3641 inhabitants, in 2012 there were already 7091 people living in Neuhofen.

Economic development

Even when Neuhofen was founded, the mills on Rehbach played a major role. There were at least three mills, two of which still exist today. The Waldmühle (formerly Mannheimer Walkmühle ) is now a restaurant, the mill wheel is dry. The mill in the Rehhütte district, which has been part of Limburgerhof since 1930, has been owned by BASF together with the Rehhütte estate since 1898. The mill wheel is still in operation at times. There is also a device for rafting wood ( wood drift ).

Fishing is also likely to have been an important economic factor in earlier times, because the Rhine ran close to the place until 1584.

Until the Second World War, peat digging was also practiced in the Woog and Erlenbruch, as evidenced by ponds, ditches and swamp forests in this area. In agriculture there was some viticulture in the south of the village, this area is now called Speyerer Wingert .

With the construction of the train station and the founding of the sugar factory, industrialization came to the village. The people of Neuhofen were also able to get to Ludwigshafen am Rhein quickly by rail, making Neuhofen a place of residence for workers from BASF and the other chemical plants.

Building materials in the form of sand and gravel continued to be mined in Neuhofen. Of this, the Kistner pond and the Ochsenfeld (extension of the Old Rhine ) remain as a connected nature reserve and the Schlicht quarry pond . In Altrip and Waldsee, a whole series of other lakes were created, most of which are now used as local recreation areas. (The Steinerne Brücke quarry pond was used to harvest gravel, but was expressly planned for use as a bathing lake.)

An expansion of the Ludwigshafen - Mannheim tram network to Neuhofen has been a topic of discussion for decades, especially from Neuhofen local government. All public transport can be used at uniform prices within the Rhein-Neckar transport association (VRN).

Neuhofen also has a good network of cycle paths. A special feature is a cycle path on the north-south axis, which runs through the center of the village with the help of three underpasses and enough descents without coming into contact with the car traffic.
